Mercy Medical Center is proud to announce that eight Mercy nurses have been selected to be honored among the 100 Great Iowa Nurses for 2007.
The 100 Great Iowa Nurses award recognizes that the nurses have made a meaningful and lasting contribution to humanity and their profession, and are viewed as a mentor to others. They exemplify the principles on which the 100 Great Nurses Celebration was founded.
The eight nurses from Mercy Medical Center selected for this honor include:
- Connie Ternus, Cardiopulmonary
- Linda Klein, Birthplace
- Debra Schmidt, Orthopaedics
- Sallie Buelow, Women’s Center
- Jane Korver, Treatment Center
- Christine Harlander, Hospice
- Sister James Marie Donahue, Mercy Foundation

The Mercy nurses will be among those honored on Sunday, May 6, at the 3rd annual celebration of Iowa ’s Great Nurses. The 2007 honorees will gather at a reception in West Des Moines with their family, friends and colleagues, as well as past years' recipients, to be recognized for their outstanding careers and achievements.
The 100 honorees represent 44 counties, and the initial pool of 338 nominees came from 61 of Iowa ’s 99 counties. The field of nominees was narrowed to 100 by a panel of judges, including nursing professionals and last year’s award winners, who received nominations from around the state.
Nurses selected for the honor represent many sectors of health care, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and school and office nurses. Similar celebrations of the nursing profession are held in the states of Louisiana , North Carolina and Texas .
