The Mercy Regional Cancer Center , 701 10th St. SE , is proud to announce it is the recipient of a $25,000 Community Program grant from the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) to implement the Especially for Me Breast Cancer Survivor Wellness Study. The LAF recently awarded grants to five community-based, cancer survivorship programs across the country.
The Especially for Me Breast Cancer Survivor Wellness Study is designed to combat the two most prevalent long-term side effects of therapy for breast cancer; weight gain and fatigue. The 12-week program focuses on guided exercise with a personal health coach and nutrition counseling with a clinical dietician. It is offered at no cost to participants. Mercy’s study will continue for two years, tracking 100 women’s recovery through fitness and learning healthy lifestyle choices.
“Through our grant program, the LAF focuses on improving quality of life for people affected by cancer,” said Suzanne Kho, director of grants for the LAF. “We are delighted to support community organizations like the Mercy Regional Cancer Center in their efforts to help cancer survivors face the challenges and changes that come with cancer.”
“We are thrilled to be among the programs chosen for this grant,” says Ann Collins-Hattery, director of the Mercy Regional Cancer Center . “We are seeing excellent results from the women who have participated in this study. The Lance Armstrong Foundation grant will allow us to help each participant meet her individual goals.”
In addition to the LAF grant, the Especially for Me project has received $10,000 from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, $3000 from the McGrath Family Foundation, as well as the Spirit of Excellence award from Modern Healthcare magazine for $5,000.
