Mercy Medical Center Awarded Recertification
on Disease-specific Care Programs
Mercy Medical Center has been awarded a one-year extension for Disease-Specific Care certification for four of its programs: Primary Stroke Center , Primary Cardiac/Heart Attack Center, Primary Women and Heart Disease Center , and its Total Joint Replacement Center . 
The recertification from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) recognizes Mercy’s continued success in complying with JCAHO’s nationally-recognized standards for health care.
JCAHO evaluates and accredits nearly 17,000 health care organizations and programs nationwide. The re-certification for Disease-Specific Care (DSC) means Mercy continues to follow the most rigorous standards in health care and reinforces Mercy’s commitment to an environment of quality and safety assurances.
The four Mercy programs first won the JCAHO certification one year ago, following a December 2005 on-site visit and evaluation by a JCAHO reviewer. The programs were cited for effective use of evidence-based standards and National Patient Safety Goals throughout the continuum of care for these patient services. At that time, Mercy was one of only three hospitals in Iowa to win DSC certification.
