Mercy Regional Cancer Center

Saving lives with the most advanced cancer care in the region for over 50 years.

That’s the Mercy Touch.®

Did you know there’s a national-caliber cancer center right here in Cedar Rapids?  For over 50 years, the Mercy Regional Cancer Center has been the area’s pioneer in detecting, diagnosing, and treating cancers of all types.

In 1956, we were the first treatment center west of the Mississippi to offer cobalt-beam radiation treatment technology. And we haven’t stopped innovating and improving since.  Today, the Mercy Regional Cancer Center brings together the most experienced staff, the most advanced technology, and the most comprehensive care available in the region.  That’s what the Mercy Touch is all about.

What makes the Mercy Regional Cancer Center unique?

  • Mercy participates in national clinical trials—including Mayo Clinic trials—that are leading to major breakthroughs in cancer treatment.
  • We work closely with top surgeons at Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa (PCI) and medical oncologists/hematologists from both Iowa Blood & Cancer Care and Oncology Associates.
  • We have a dedicated oncology nurse clinician and highly experienced oncology nursing staff that ensure patient care meets the high standards of the Oncology Nursing Society.
  • We treat 880 patients a year from 27 counties.
  • Mercy was the first hospital in the region to offer specialized Symptom Management care for hospitalized cancer patients.
  • We have expertise in all areas of cancer treatment, including detection, diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and nutrition.
  • Mercy has the only TomoTherapy HI-ART Image Guided Radiation System  in Iowa, which serves cancer patients in a three-state area.
  • We have brought a state-of-the-art High Dose Radiation (HDR) system to the Mercy Regional Cancer Center.  For the first time ever, patients who need HDR are able to get this advanced therapy right here in Cedar Rapids.

Cancer Fighting TechnologyThe most current, most advanced cancer-fighting technology.

Better technology leads to better results against cancer.  At the Mercy Regional Cancer Center, physicians and patients can take advantage of the most sophisticated cancer technology available—including Iowa’s first TomoTherapy  image-guided radiation system, High Dose Radiation Therapy, a state-of-the-art PET/CT scanner, an advanced BAT system, and IMRT 3-dimensional radiation therapy.

By giving doctors the best tools, we help give patients the best chance to heal.

People.

Treating the whole patient, not just the cancer.Mercy's Dr. Merfeld With Patient

Cancer attacks the spirit, not just that body.  At the Mercy Regional Cancer Center, we’ve seen time and time again the powerful healing benefits to our patients of treating the spiritual and emotional side of cancer as well as the physical side—with hope, encouragement, compassion and understanding.

Our staff members are caring, sensitive professionals who are dedicated to helping patients and families overcome the challenges of cancer. It’s called the Mercy Touch—and it really does make a difference.

Iowa’s only Image-Guided Radiation Therapy System.

Mercy is the only hospital to offer a major new breakthrough in precision radiation targeting of tumors.  The new TomoTherapy HI-ART system  allows radiologists to deliver accurate and powerful beams of radiation from 360 degrees which precisely targets the tumor, while causing less damage to surrounding, healthy tissue.
