Spring Checklist: School Physicals

Dr. Soenen with a patientIt may be hard to think about as the current school year is still winding down, but it’s already time to start booking your child’s school or sports physical for next year! These appointments can take a little longer than your acute visits throughout the year, so it is important to get on your physician’s schedule as soon as possible because they will fill up quickly.

Remember, school physicals are important for building a relationship between your child and his or her doctor. Plus, this type of appointment may reveal potential problems sooner and allow you to stay ahead of them.

Physicals are also a great opportunity for your child’s doctor to check in on things that may not come up at other appointments – mental health, puberty, social issues and more. Updating immunization records can also fit into this appointment, which many schools require for registration.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that every child receives care through a family-centered medical home. MercyCare is proud to offer a medical home structure, meaning coordinated care via our electronic medical record. This ensures you get the highest quality care where and when you need it – at MercyCare, a specialist, Mercy Medical Center or even at home.

Make sure this important appointment doesn’t fall off your radar before summer flies by! To schedule a school or sports physical, call your MercyCare clinic or Mercy Pediatric Clinic today. If you are in need of a primary care provider, call our Find a Doc line at (319) 369-4444.
