Mercy's 2008 Especially For You® race is second largest in event's 18-year history
CEDAR RAPIDS-Glorious autumn weather greeted participants at the 18th Annual Especially For You® Race Against Breast Cancer on Sunday, Oct. 12, at Mercy Medical Center. This year's race is the second largest in the event's history, with 10,194 people registered. That compares to an all-time high of 10,774 participants last year when the race was cancelled due to inclement weather.
General Mills and Mercy Medical Center are co-founders of the race, which includes a 5K run and walk and a one-mile family fun walk. Major sponsors for the event this year are Fairfax State Savings Bank and Toyota Financial Services.
All proceeds from race registrations and contributions go to the Especially for You fund. The fund provides mammography and other breast-care services for area women who otherwise cannot afford them. Since 1991 the fund has been accessed 8,118 times by 4,404 women, for a total of $1.13M in services.
