IHI recognizes Mercy for outstanding quality results in national study

CEDAR RAPIDS-Mercy Medical Center, 701 10th St. SE , has surfaced as a leading hospital in a national sample study conducted by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).  The study compared hospitals that have made exceptional improvements in patient satisfaction, risk adjusted mortality rates and hospital expenditures.  From the several hundred U.S. hospitals that were part of the study, IHI identified 16 exemplary facilities.  Of these, Mercy was recognized as No. 1 overall based on quality information in the following four categories:  1) clinical quality; 2) cost effectiveness; 3) patient satisfaction; and 4) financial security.

As a result of Mercy's strong performance Maureen Bisognano, IHI executive vice president & COO, visited Mercy on Nov. 20.  Bisognano says, "My goal was to see firsthand how Mercy has been so successful in reducing and sustaining mortality rates over several years, for achieving high levels of patient satisfaction and also achieving outstanding results in other quality measures.  My observations supported the data.  Mercy is a shining example of ‘best practices' in health care and how that translates to better patient care."

Bisognano presented her findings about Mercy at the IHI's International Conference in Nashville , TN Dec.10-11.
