Register now for 21st Especially for You® Race Against Breast Cancer
Registration is now underway for the 21st annual Especially For You® (EFY) Race Against Breast Cancer. Race day is Sun., Oct. 2. The race is co-founded by Mercy Medical Center and General Mills.
Teams can register for the race online at www.especiallyforyourace.org until Aug. 28, or in person by Aug. 31. Individuals can register online through Sept. 25, and in person up until 7:30 a.m. on race day, although earlier registration is encouraged. In addition to offering registration options, the EFY web site allows race participants to access breast cancer resources, order EFY merchandise and share personal stories electronically.
A breast cancer survivor’s photo will be taken at 7:30 a.m. on race day. Opening ceremonies will start at 7:45 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m. and starts on 8th St. SE by Mercy Medical Center. The competitive 5K run is for women only, but men are invited to participate as non-competitors. The 5K walk and the one-mile family fun walk are open to everyone.
Race organizers expect record-setting registration again this year. Last year 15,464 people took part to support the EFY fund which is used locally and provides breast care services such as mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies and support services for individuals in need. In 2010, 605 individuals received 831 services.
The race and the fund are dedicated to the memory of Sandy Knight, a Whittier resident and General Mills employee who died of breast cancer in July 1991. She helped found Mercy’s Especially For You After Breast Cancer Support Group. Her dream was to establish a race to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and education.
Those who register for the race receive an EFY t-shirt. This year’s t-shirt color is purple.
