Mercy Medical Center Welcomes Stim LabTM Mobile Simulator System

Mobile training unit features drug-free therapy for treating chronic pain

Mercy Medical Center will host Boston Scientific's STIM Lab Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) Mobile Simulator System on Tues., Nov. 17, 7 to 10 a.m., at Mercy Health Plaza, 5264 Council St. NE. There will be a simulated cadaver on the bus with a technology suite that explains how the therapy works. Based on flight simulation technology developed by the U.S. military to train fighter pilots, STIM (SCS Training and Instruction Mobile) Lab is the first and only SCS clinical training system of its kind. The innovative, mobile education unit visits hospitals around the country and offers healthcare professionals the opportunity to train on SCS devices using high-tech simulation.

Since Boston Scientific started the program earlier this year, pain management physicians across the country have used the STIM Lab for hands-on SCS training. The STIM Lab Mobile Simulator System is on tour throughout the U.S. through the end of 2009.

"High-tech medical simulation is playing a growing role in medicine," says Dr. Michael Jackson, MercyCare Occupational Health Partners at Mercy's Health Plaza. "STIM Lab helps educate the community on SCS as a treatment option for chronic pain. It also provides advanced training to our staff so that we can more effectively offer this option to our patients."

A spinal cord stimulation device is a drug-free, reversible option for treating chronic pain. By delivering electrical signals to the spinal cord to mask pain signals, it has helped thousands of people find relief from low back pain and lower extremity pain.

According to the American Medical Association, one in five Americans suffers from chronic pain; more than 75 million people are partially or totally disabled by pain; and 45% of all Americans seek care for persistent pain at some point in their lives.
