Cleft Lip/Palate Team
Did you know cleft lip and palate occurs in one in every 800 newborns in the U.S.? Although it's a fairly common birth defect, it's often a shock to most families. Thankfully, there is an entire team in Cedar Rapids that knows exactly what your child needs and will walk you through the process.
The Cedar Rapids Cleft Lip & Palate Team is a multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals who have a special interest in treating patients with cleft lip and palate. The goal of the team is to help families understand their individualized treatment needs and to work to achieve the best results.
The team consists of specialists in the areas of:
- Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
- Ear, Nose & Throat
- Oral Surgery
- Pediatric & General Dentistry
- Speech Therapy
- Lactation Consultants
Although the Cedar Rapids team does not currently accept newborn patients, we anticipate this will change in the near future. When we do accept newborns, Mercy Medical Center will work with you to develop a general timeline for treatment which includes a referral to the Cleft Lip & Palate Team. Shortly after the baby's birth, a member of the team will visit the family and then specialists make sure the baby and family have all the resources and assistance they need. This includes help from a lactation consultant, speech therapist and others.
The team then follows the patient and family throughout the teenage and adult years to provide necessary referrals and treatment to optimize the child's care.
