Diabetes
Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Mercy Medical Center is one of only eight facilities of its kind and the only Joslin-affiliated center in Iowa. As the education component of Crawford Diabetes Services, the center helps provide people with diabetes the information they need to better manage their disease and decrease their risk for complications.
Certified in 1989, the Center uses a team of diabetes specialists to provide both individualized and group instruction for people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, as well as pregnant women with diabetes.
Physicians, nurses, dietitians, and social workers, the majority of whom are certified diabetes educators, coordinate their areas of expertise to help those with diabetes better understand and control their diabetes.
Arun Movva, M.D., Cedar Rapids' first and currently only physician specializing in Endocrinology, joined Mercy in December of 2008, after practicing at the Joslin Diabetes Center affiliate in Syracuse, New York. As a specialist in Endocrinology, Dr. Movva is trained to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in one's system. Dr. Movva treats patients with the following conditions:
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Thyroid conditions
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Pituitary diseases
- Osteoporosis (bone loss)
- Hypogonadism (low testosterone)
- Polycycstic ovary disease
- Other endocrine disorders
Patients who are obese may visit an endocrinologist to have their hormone levels assessed, as hormones regulate appetite, metabolism and energy stability. Medical conditions associated with obesity include insulin resistance, reproductive issues, metabolic syndrome and genetic problems.
Mercy partnered with Joslin Diabetes Center, an affiliate of Harvard University , in 2007. This partnership allows Mercy’s staff to access the latest advancements in diabetes education, care and treatment. Joslin is the most-recognized, well-regarded clinical champion of technology and new diabetes research. Eastern Iowans now have direct access to their latest findings, recommendations, protocols and teaching materials to help improve their diabetes management.
The center sponsors a diabetes camp for children each summer and is involved in a variety of community outreach programs.
