Fit Families
Fit Families is a physician-driven clinic helping overweight children and teenagers. Families attend a series of clinic visits with a Doctor, Dietitian, and Exercise Specialist. We understand that parents may often feel guilty or blame themselves for their child's extra weight. It is our goal to help families understand that obesity is affecting many people throughout our community and that there is hope for change.
Statistics to Consider
- 25% of all children ages 2-18 years in the United States are overweight.
- 65% of Iowa adults are overweight or obese.
What Can You Do?
There are many ways that your family can take the steps to help battle childhood obesity and we are here to help you through the process. Established in 2006, Fit Families was created to help families within the community that struggle with weight management and obesity.
Currently, Fit Families sees children and teenagers < 19 years old.
Offering a comprehensive program that teaches important lifestyle changes, families will meet with a nurse practitioner or physician, a dietitian, an exercise coordinator and a mental health counselor. Our dedicated staff will also monitor children for diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure. Most Fit Families visits are held in the Mercy Women's Center, except for Fit Families Exercise Specialist Visits, which are usually in the Mercy Fitness Center (5264 Council Street NE). Fit Families accepts self-referrals and provider referrals, and is covered by most insurance companies
