Cardiac Rehabilitiation

Mercy’s Inpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation

After myocardial infarction (heart attack) or other cardiac difficulty, recovery begins with a program of low-intensity exercise before you leave Mercy Medical Center.

Mercy’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Team of registered nurses and exercise specialists is directed by each patient’s physician. The team’s goal is to enable you to gradually increase their level of physical activity. This exercise may include mild calisthenics and walking to develop strength.

Patients are closely monitored by Mercy’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Team. We work with you and for you as you regain strength. Blood pressure and pulse rate checks are taken with exercise. Progression exercise and activities are added based on your response to them and input from the physician.

We also provide education tailored to your individual needs. This includes instruction in making lifestyle changes necessary to reduce risk of future cardiac events; watching for warning signs and symptoms of cardiac problems; and direction on how to progress to the Outpatient level and a home exercise program.

Inpatient exercise decreases the usual weakness problems associated with bed rest and helps you develop confidence during a stressful time. It also helps you realize you are not permanently incapacitated and you can return to active living.
