Hallmar – Bringing the Mercy Touch Home
We call Hallmar “a nice place to call home,” and we want everyone who lives here to feel like it is home. That’s what the “Mercy touch” is all about.
Hallmar, an intermediate-level, residential nursing facility at Mercy Medical Center, provides its residents with excellent care.
History
Howard and Margaret Hall built Hallmar in 1960; it was only the second hospital-affiliated residential care facility in Iowa. The Halls financed an addition and a new fountain in 1967. The Hall Foundation transferred Hallmar ownership to Mercy in 1977. The strong bond with Mercy provides special advantages to Hallmar residents.
Admission
Cost is based on the level of care provided and type of accommodations. Hallmar is a private pay facility. The physician, nurse manager and/or nurse clinician at Hallmar determine daily care. We offer minimal (minimal assistance); moderate (some assistance in dressing, toileting and ambulation, and usually able to feed self); and heavy (total care).
At the time of admission, a resident or his or her legal representative and a Hallmar representative sign the Hallmar Resident Agreement. A copy of a resident’s Rights and Responsibilities is given to and reviewed with each resident or legal representative.
Rooms
Hallmar offers semi-private, small private and large private rooms, as well as suites. We try to provide the preferred type of room. If it’s not immediately available, the resident may move when accommodations become available.
Residents are encouraged to bring their own furnishings and personal items to create a comfortable, home-like atmosphere. A hospital bed is required and will be provided, along with a bedside stand and table.
Meals
Hallmar residents’ meals are prepared by Mercy’s Food and Nutritional Services. Residents choose meals from menus planned by professional dietitians. We encourage residents to eat lunch and dinner in the Hallmar dining room. Breakfast may be served in the resident’s room. Residents may be taken out for meals, and may have meal guests on special occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.). Arrangements must be made several days in advance.
Medical Services
Each resident must have a Cedar Rapids physician with staff privileges at Mercy Medical Center. The physician will handle the resident’s clinical care, visiting the resident on admission, periodically, and when called by nursing staff. An annual history and physical are required.
Nursing Services
Nursing care is directed and supervised by the nurse manager. Licensed nurses are available 24 hours a day.
Activity Program
Daily social, recreational and creative activities are available for all residents. Personnel plan individual and group activities and facilitate participation in select community events.
Care Conference
An interdisciplinary care conference is held within three weeks of admission and every three months thereafter. The nurse manager, nurse clinician, social worker, dietitian, pharmacist and activities coordinator review the resident’s care. Residents and their families are encouraged to attend and offer input.
