Mercy Medical CenterMRI Scan

Scheduling: 319-398-6794

WHAT IT IS:

An MRI scan produces dimensional images by using a large magnet and radio waves. It is a way of looking inside the body without using x-rays. A strong magnetic field is created and a radio frequency is beamed into that magnetic field. Measurements of energy from the tissue being scanned are sent to the computer where the screen image can then be recorded so there is a permanent copy. Most MRI scans take approximately 45 minutes.

The MRI "sees" right through bone, and clearly pictures soft tissue. MRI does not expose the patient to x-ray radiation and the magnetic fields used are not known to be harmful. The scan is completely painless. You will feel nothing but the movement of the table after each section is scanned. It is important to lie still throughout the entire procedure, as any motion may distort the image. During the exam, you will hear some loud knocking sounds. You will be given ear plugs.

Some MRI scans require the injection of a contrast medium in a vein. This provides an enhanced image of certain tissues of the body.

The various MRI scans require little or no preparation. The exact preparation for the scan you are to have should be listed below. Please ask your nurse or call your doctor’s office if you have any questions about the preparation.
