Help with Health Insurance Questions Help with Health Insurance Questions

Mercy Generations and Heritage Area Agency on Aging offer a Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP).  SHIIP volunteers provide free, confidential and unbiased health insurance counseling for seniors.  They explain Medicare benefits and long-term care policies, and help organize medical bills and Medicare statements.

SHIIP volunteers also help seniors file claims, compare Medicare supplement policies, understand Medicare managed care, and evaluate employer retirement plans.  Seniors who wish to schedule appointments at other times may contact Linda Dearinger, SHIIP Coordinator at Heritage Area Agency on Aging, 319-398-5559 or 1-800-332-5934.

Senior Resource Directory

The Senior Resource Directory, listing a wide range of resources for seniors, is available free to Mercy Generations members.  Topics include health care, food, clothing, housing, transportation, financial, legal and social.  To obtain your copy, call 319-398-6026 or toll-free 1-866-616-9600.

Help with Advance Directives

The Mercy Pastoral Care department will help Mercy Generations members with advance directives including a living will and durable power of attorney for health care.  Pastoral Care staff members will also notarize and make copies of these documents.  For more information, call the Pastoral Care department, 319-398-6106.

Access to Support Groups

Dealing with an illness or other health condition can be difficult, and support groups help people understand and cope with their concerns.  Mercy Generations members are welcome to attend any of the hospital’s support groups. Click here for a listing of Mercy Support Groups. Or, for more information, contact Mercy Resource Library, 319-398-6598.
