What are the promising areas in osteoporosis research today?

Emerging therapies currently being investigated include growth hormones, estrogen-like therapies, vitamin D derivatives, parathyroid hormone and sodium fluoride, as well as new bisphosphonates.

The National Institutes of Health has funded a study to investigate the effects of calcium and phosphorous supplements on those with osteoporosis who receive bone-building therapy.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, researchers have found that a large number of families with osteoporosis and low bone density had a common gene. The identification of specific genes related to bone density may lead to the development of novel treatments for the disease.
