Menopause

Types of Menopause

Natural Menopause

Menopause is a natural biological process with hormonal, physical and psychosocial changes. Technically speaking, health-care providers define menopause as the time after one year has passed since your last period. But the process of the changes associated with menopause can take place over many years; that time frame is termed “perimenopause.” The average age of natural menopause in the United States is between 51 and 52. The range of ages for natural menopause is 45 to 55 years old.

Premature Menopause

Premature menopause refers to menopause that occurs before age 40. The causes often are unknown, but could include heredity, smoking, radiation exposure, chemotherapy drugs or surgery that impairs the supply of blood to the ovaries.

Women with premature menopause are good candidates for hormone therapy (HT), also known as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and are encouraged to discuss this therapy with their health-care providers.

Surgical Menopause

Surgical menopause occurs when a woman has her ovaries surgically removed (oophorectomy) at the time of a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). Menopause symptoms can occur more severely in a younger woman who has her ovaries removed. Hormone therapy can be an important treatment.
