A Leader by Example

Excellence ... a word describing one of Mercy Medical Center's central values, but also a word befitting of long-time Board of Trustee member, Dave Neuhaus. Dave, a Mercy trustee since 1983, is a dedicated leader, passionate about the quality of healthcare and services provided by Mercy.
Dave Neuhaus, President/CEO of Fairfax State Savings Bank, has a long history with both the bank and the town of Fairfax. He has worked at the bank for 52 years and is a well-respected community leader. Fairfax honored him a few years ago for serving 48 years as a volunteer fireman. The framed golden hatchet presented to him is prominently displayed in his office. Dave humbly states, "My two most rewarding volunteer experiences have been as volunteer fireman and serving on Mercy's board."
Dave's tenure at Mercy began with a visit by Sister Mary Lawrence Hallagan and former board member, Lew Van Nostrand. Dave was a frequent visitor to Mercy prior to their meeting. Almost every day for five years, Dave came to visit both his father and his boss who were living in Hallmar-Mercy's long term care facility. "I think Sister and Lew decided that since I spent so much time at Mercy they might as well put me on the board," Dave laughed.
During his 23 years at Mercy, Dave has served on almost every board committee. He is quick to point out his favorite assignment, the Quality Assurance Committee. He explained, "I was in awe of the Mercy staff members who served on that committee. The general public would be so impressed with the high level of excellence, detail and efficiencies that occur every single day."
Fairfax State Savings Bank is also a strong supporter of Mercy acting as major sponsor of the annual "Especially for You" Breast Cancer Race. Their involvement has special meaning for Dave, having lost two wives to cancer. "I'm a firm believer in breast cancer awareness. Annually, we arrange for the Mobile Mammography unit to come to Fairfax. We cover the costs for local women to get tested and I'm not bashful about asking women if they've had their annual exam."
Thanks to Dave's leadership, Fairfax State Savings Bank is regarded as a vital civic supporter. The bank was honored in 2003 as an "Outstanding Philanthropic Organization" by AFP-the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Dave's leadership exemplifies the true meaning of service to others. He is deeply caring and committed, and is recognized as a model of excellence. Mercy is fortunate that Sister Mary Lawrence and Mr. Van Nostrand recognized that excellence more than 20 years ago.
