When at work, you may be overcome with stress. To make sure you take care of yourself while still getting your work done, follow the tips below.
Take Your Space
Whether you close your door to your office or walk around the block, take some space to breathe when you feel overwhelmed. If you need to do some breathing exercises, cry or talk yourself down from anger, your office or bathroom is your safe space. If your department is small, taking a walk outside can release your pent-up energy, as well as greet you with fresh air. Even at work, remember to take time for yourself in between projects. A way to make sure you take a stress-relieving break for yourself is by taking a daily 15 to 30-minute walk; not only are you healthily exercising, but you relieve your stress.
Organize Your Priorities
Through a daily to-do list, you can organize your priority projects, so you aren’t overwhelmed with the number of projects you have to do. By breaking down which project has the earliest deadline to the ones that can wait a few days, you can work through your list easily. Whether you write it on a notepad, whiteboard or Word document, a list will help you stay organized.
Speak with Your Manager
If you feel your workload is too heavy or you’re having issues with a project/coworker, talk with your manager or Human Resources calmly and politely about it – that’s what they’re there for. Hopefully, your manager can explain what projects are more important to work on and may be able to alleviate the workload or issue.
Talk to a Counselor
Work and personal stress can add up to a lot. If you feel overly stressed and are worried about how it’s affecting you, talk to a counselor. Contact Mercy EAP at (319) 398-6694 to schedule a video, phone or in-person appointment to talk through your problems and find resolutions.
