When the snow starts to fall and temperatures drop, staying active can be more challenging. Being sedentary can have negative effects on your heart, blood pressure and mental health. Here are some tips for staying active this winter:
Walks may be associated with warm weather months, but a winter walk can also be refreshing. Bundle up as much as possible, including boots or shoes with good traction. It’s nice to get out of the house to burn some calories and clear your head when you are cooped up all day. Can’t fit a long walk in? Try a few short walks.
Consider indoor sports: basketball, volleyball, racquetball and indoor walking tracks are great ways to stay active when it’s cold. Along with the physical benefits, they are a great way to be social as well. Schools, gyms and community centers often have open gym time or rec leagues. Guest passes are often available. Mall walking is a good, no-cost option. Up for something more intense? Ice skating and skiing are great calorie burns and also a lot of fun.
If you haven’t tried yoga, the winter is a great time to give it a try. Yoga is beneficial both mentally and physically and classes are offered at all levels. Pilates, dance, cycling and kickboxing are also fun indoor options to try. Many businesses offer free trials so you can see if you like it before making a commitment. There are also a lot of free video workout options available online.
