Mercy's Bicentennial Baby

  • Sara with her parents

Sara Goslin Neff, ARNP, was Mercy's bicentennial baby! The U.S. bicentennial on July 4, 1976, was the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Although she was born in the early morning of July 5, 1976, Sara was the closest to the 4th of July in the bicentennial year, earning her lots of attention. Mercy dedicated its then-monthly publication to her, which also featured Tom Seabrook, the oldest living person born at Mercy (1906) at the time. It was later reprinted in The Gazette.

The article focused on the medical developments Tom had seen during his lifetime, including the introduction of antibiotics, development of X-rays, widespread use of anesthesia, transplant operations and total joint replacements. The writer wondered, "Will Sara's lifetime bring a bionic person? A cure for cancer?"

Not yet, although the article also touched on pediatric diabetes, which is now one of Sara's specialties.

"Sara's children, if they have diabetes, may not face possible blindness because of the disease, which (ophthalmologist) Dr. (John) Puk says is the number one cause of blindness," they wrote in 1976.

Now, "Pediatric diabetes patients still face many medical hardships, including complications of vision, but blindness among children with diabetes is not seen," Sara said.

this time [my child] really felt like Sara was blaming her for not properly taking care of herself. [My child] is trying but when upset her sugars spike plus [other] factors that will cause issues with her numbers. wearing her pump makes no difference at all.

We were scheduled to see Dr. Machnowski, but he was called away for an emergency and Sara Goslin Neff stepped in to speak with us. She was fantastic! Even more impressive was the fact that she called later in the evening on a subsequent night to report the findings of [a procedure] taken after hour at a different Mercy clinic. That blew us away! The fact that she understood the anxiety we, as parents, were feeling and wanted to reassure us (despite the fact that she was taking time away from her own family) was unbelievably kind. We were very appreciative.
