Physician was excellent. Very patient, explained everything in great detail. Talked directly to my daughter and not me, which was nice.

Dr. Zittergruen is one of my most favorite doctors I've gotten to work with. He brings a sense of ease to the discussion. He gets to know my son. He is a very good listener and offers scientific explanations for what my son is experiencing. He also does not go overboard on medication. He leaves it as an option if some other things don't work first.

I came to Dr. Zittergruen for a second opinion/to have my daughter followed by him after feeling uneasy about her follow-up care in Iowa City. It was the very best decision that I have made, for her, so far. I am so grateful that we came to Mercy and specifically Dr. Zittergruen. I have never felt so at peace with the explanations provided and the care plan, that was set in place, as I do now. Thank you to the AMAZING nurses and radiology tech who also treated us with such kindness. What a great place to be cared for!

The entire team at Mercy Pediatric Cardiology is amazing, especially Dr. Zittergruen! They are all very sensitive, especially considering this is pediatric cardiology, they engage with and include the minor patient in the appointment, they answer questions I, the adult, did not even know I had! Further, they are so accommodating and always positive and encouraging and take the time to make us feel like we're not even at a cardiology appointment!

the doctor was very thorough and spent a great deal of time explaining things in detail

i like that Dr. Z directed all his questions and conversation to Violet, not us as parents, as it made her feel more grown up and establish a better relationship and trust with Dr. Z.

Patient Stories

A Little Warrior's Big Battle

Hayley Ballew had a feeling something wasn't right as she nursed her newborn son, Carter, in September 2016. I could tell he was latching really well, but he had to let off to take a breath," the Marion mother of two remembers. Hayley and her husband, Eric, noticed Carter's head bobbed slightly with each breath and his chest retracted in unusual places. Read their story on page 6.
