Published on December 20, 2011
A supervisor at Mercy Medical Center is being recognized by The Iowa Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense.
Suzanne Lewis, Co-Director of Food and Nutrition Services at Mercy, will be honored with a Patriot Award on Dec. 20 in recognition of her extraordinary support of employees whose spouses serve in the Iowa National Guard. A special ceremony is planned.
Dick Rue, Iowa ESGR State Chair, said, “The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patrioticsupport and cooperation to their employees who, like their spouses, have answered their nation’s call to serve.”
Lewis was nominated for the award by two of her employees – Sarah Young and Lori Winborn - for being highly supportive of them and their young families while their husbands were recently deployed to Iraq. Their husbands are now back home and will take part in the special ceremony honoring Lewis.
“Suzanne did a great job in providing flexibility in our schedules this past year to reduce any work-related stress when our personal lives were in transition,” said Sarah Young, Registered Dietitian. “We are thankful for her mindfulness and we want to acknowledge Suzanne with this award.”
“When our husbands returned for their two week break this past summer, Suzanne was sure to provide any time off that was needed, despite the fact that days off during the summer months are in high demand,” said Lori Winborn, Registered Dietitian.
“In addition,” Suzanne also helped organize a department potluck in the park just for us,” said Winborn. “After many meals eaten alone, or with children only, it was a welcomed change to eat with friends while the kids could play and enjoy themselves.”
Sarah Young is married to 1st Lieutenant Tom Young. Lori Winborn is married to Captain Ben Winborn. Both men were deployed to Iraq for one year. The men are part of the Army National Guard Aviation Unit stationed out of Davenport, IA.
