Home > Mercy News > "Messages from Within" now reside within the walls of Mercy’s Hall-Perrine Cancer Center
Published on November 04, 2011
One of the messages reads, "With Hope ... We cancer-vive." Another reads, "Mom, You are the strongest person I know. I’m so proud of you. You fought the fight and won! ~ J.S."
These messages and countless other heartfelt sentiments and drawings now reside within the walls of Mercy’s new Hall-Perrine Cancer Center. The messages are handwritten on 10 separate sections of drywall that were secured into place at an informal ceremony Friday morning, Nov. 4.
The drywall project is called, "Messages from Within." The 10 pieces of drywall have traveled to various places throughout the community for the last six months, giving cancer patients, family members, healthcare providers and others an opportunity to express their thoughts, in writing, about how cancer has touched their lives.
The sections of drywall were first available for signing in June – at the Cedar Rapids Relay for Life – and have "visited" local physician offices, the downtown Cedar Rapids Farmer’s Market, the Especially for You® Race and various departments and locations throughout Mercy Medical Center.
On Nov. 4, Mercy held a brief ceremony on the 3rd floor of the new cancer center. The sections of drywall were blessed by the Sisters of Mercy and one of the sections was ceremoniously secured into place in an area of the center were patients will receive chemotherapy. Oncology Associates will occupy the 3rd floor once the facility is completed next spring.
A professional photographer has also captured images of all the adorned drywall sections and Mercy will utilize that artwork throughout the center.
The Hall-Perrine Cancer Center represents the next chapter in Mercy’s long legacy of providing the very best cancer care to our community. The area’s finest cancer specialists will provide fully integrated, patient-centered cancer care in one location, close to home. The 85,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art facility will open in the spring of 2012.
