Mercy Cedar Rapids achieves Dementia Friendly designation
Mercy is largest organization in Iowa to earn this recognition
Mercy Medical Center has officially been designated as a Dementia Friendly Organization by Dementia Friendly Iowa, making Mercy the largest healthcare organization in the state to receive this recognition.
This designation reflects Mercy’s mission and ongoing commitment to compassionate, person-centered care for all individuals. Throughout the last six months, Mercy’s trained Dementia Champions have led extensive education and training across the hospital and clinics, equipping staff to better recognize the signs of dementia; communicate with greater patience and understanding; and support patients and families with dignity and respect.
“Becoming dementia-friendly reinforces The Mercy Touch,” said Dr. Timothy Quinn, president & CEO of Mercy Medical Center. “It ensures that every encounter – from the bedside to the front desk and throughout every support department – demonstrates dignity, respect and compassion for all individuals we serve.”
More than 62,000 Iowans age 65 and older are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, which is about 11% of the state’s senior population. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, but not the only one. Because the majority of people living with dementia reside in the community, organizations across all sectors play vital roles in creating environments that are welcoming, supportive and responsive to their needs.
As a Dementia Friendly Organization, Mercy is committed to developing and sustaining practices that keep individuals with dementia and their caregivers in mind. Mercy will continue this work through its Dementia Friendly Ambassador Program, which focuses on ongoing education; reinforcement of best practices; and support for patients, caregivers and the broader community.
