Mercy completes renovation of downtown Emergency Room waiting area
Mercy Medical Center is pleased to announce the completion of renovations to its downtown Emergency Room waiting area. This project, made possible by a generous $1 million donation from a local Cedar Rapids couple, reflects a shared commitment to enhancing patient care and comfort.
The couple, who have chosen to remain anonymous, expressed their gratitude for the exceptional care they received at Mercy as their inspiration for this gift.
The newly renovated space is designed to create a more efficient, secure, and welcoming environment for patients, families and staff. Key enhancements include:
- Expanded Seating: Nearly double the seating capacity with comfortable furniture options to support the needs of individuals with diverse requirements
- Safety Improvements: Incorporation of the latest advanced safety features and improved monitoring stations for security staff to ensure a secure environment for patients and staff
- Enhanced Aesthetic Features: Brighter, more welcoming environmental elements, including warm LED lighting and cleanable materials in dementia-friendly patterns and colors
“We are grateful for the support of this generous couple,” said Dr. Timothy Quinn, president and CEO of Mercy Medical Center. “Their contribution has allowed us to create a space that is not only more functional, but also more inviting and secure for those we serve. This modernized space underscores our commitment to exceptional patient care.”
During construction, an adjacent space served as a temporary waiting area, ensuring uninterrupted emergency care. The ER remained fully operational throughout the renovation process.
Mercy also operates emergency rooms in Hiawatha and, most recently, Marion.
