After giving so much of yourself in the care of a loved one, transitioning out of the caregiving role can present unexpected challenges on top of the expected sense of grief and loss.
The Family Caregivers Center of Mercy offers a series of four educational sessions, called Transitioning Out of Caregiving, focused on helping caregivers begin to move out of the caregiving role. Participants learn tools to fill the void and manage the spiritual, financial and emotional aspects of life after their loved one has died. The sessions encourage and assist participants in reestablishing an identity without the role as a caregiver.
These four sessions are offered three times each year (February, May and September). Participants then have the option of joining a Transitioning Out of Caregiving Support Group that meets the first Wednesday of every month.
Grief support for caregivers can also be found with Hospice of Mercy, which offers multiple bereavement support groups for those who have lost loved ones. Call Mercy’s Bereavement Coordinator at (319) 398-6735 to learn more.
