Hormone replacement therapy is an FDA-approved therapy in which medication containing bioidentical hormones that decline during perimenopause and menopause are administered and absorbed into your system to improve health and/or eliminate symptoms of menopause.
Hormone therapy can vary from one patient to another based on current symptoms. Types of hormone therapy include estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone that are available in a variety of forms, including pill, patch, topical gels and creams. Bioidentical therapy is prescribed by your provider, which means you can use your health insurance and regular pharmacy to get your prescriptions. Your therapy may also include the addition of nutritional counseling to aid the body in hormone absorption and improvements in overall health.
During perimenopause and menopause, the drastic decline in hormones can lead to increased risk factors. Hormone replacement therapy can protect you against these risk factors and provide additional benefits:
- Lower risk of developing:
- Bone loss/fractures and osteoporosis
- Heart disease
- Dementia
- Diabetes
- Urinary incontinence
- Vaginal prolapse
- Breast cancer
- Colorectal cancer
- Improved or reduced symptoms:
- Less joint and muscle pain
- Increase in mood
- Reduction of hot flashes
- Improved concentration
- Sound sleep
- Vaginal moisture
- Improved sexual desire
- Reduction of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
First Appointment:
Your first appointment with Sarah is scheduled for one hour and may include a pelvic exam, depending on symptoms. A thorough review of your health history, symptoms, and current medications will be reviewed, along with your personal goals and desired outcomes. Blood work may be taken that day in the Urology Clinic Lab to determine your baseline hormone levels. Blood work results are typically completed within a week and will determine your prescribed therapy dosage. Follow-up appointments are scheduled appropriately to review symptom management and to adjust any therapy dosage.
