Ever since I was young, I have had an interest in food. An elementary school project collecting pictures of what I liked had food pasted all over it. I cooked family meals as a teenager and frequented "Health Food" stores. This interest led me to the Food and Nutrition program at Georgia State University for a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics. I completed my studies with an internship at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.
I’ve been practicing Nutrition and Dietetics since 1993. My passion is to encourage the discovery of ways to be healthier – nutritionally, physically and mentally – in all aspects of our lives. Mercy Weight Loss was started because we felt there was a need in the community. Mercy Medical Center has given me the resources and time to start this program. I like to emphasize that it's not a diet program, but rather a healthier way of living.
When I was growing up, I remember spending a lot of time thinking about two things: how can I get more candy and how can I avoid eating vegetables? We lived four miles from a country store with wooden floors that was owned by some friends of my family. If I was allowed, I would pick out something sweet and eat it as soon as possible! In school, I tried to get my food tray to the dirty dish window before the teacher would see I had hardly touched by food.
Some of the friends wonder how I ever became a dietitian! It’s because I have always wanted to know how our bodies worked (I also thought a lot about this). In my work, I love helping people finds solutions to their eating challenges and getting to know the real person behind these. I spend most of my work hours in the MercyCare Diabetes Center teaching classes and working one-on-one with patients. Teaching the Mercy Weight Loss Class is a perfect addition to my usual work. I appreciate the opportunity to be creative and support people over time.
I also love biking, reading, walking my energetic Sheltie, Cooper, and spending time with family and friends. I also love vegetables.
