Meet Jan, Mercy Volunteer
Jan was just 4 years old when she walked into Mercy for the first time. Little did she know then that she would become an indispensable Mercy volunteer for 48+ years.
Since her early days in 1969, there aren’t many volunteer opportunities Jan hasn’t held. From patient tours to answering phones, aiding the Emergency Department, wayfinding with visitors and patients, and helping at various information desks, she enjoys “feeling useful” and meeting people from all walks of life.
Jan has had some profound encounters through her years of Mercy volunteerism. Each encounter reminds her that Mercy is “a great place to be.” She has accumulated nearly 14,000 Mercy volunteer hours!
Additionally, Jan serves on various leadership boards throughout the community, including at Mercy. She bridged gender divides by becoming the first woman to serve on the Cedar Rapids Baseball Club Board of Directors, and the first woman to be appointed to the City Civil Service Commission.
Thank you, Jan, for your leadership and commitment to Mercy and our community!
